Our first Hawaii Golf Cruise sailed away in October and proved to be a great success. The first few days were spent staying in Waikiki, very near to the Ala Moana shopping centre, much to the concern of some! Our first round of golf was played at the Hawaii Prince course, which was used to blow away the cobwebs and prepare us for the games ahead.
Saturday was embarkation day, when we joined the Pride of America for the 7 night cruise. Everyone quickly got to know the layout of the ship and where the best places to eat and which bars to drink at were. Sunday found us in Maui and we set off to the Kapalua Plantation course, used each year for the Champion of Champions tournament. This was a technically challenging course but we all got round what is a stunning course, with great vistas from every hole. And so it went on, with each and every golf course being different in some way but just as spectacular as the next. When the sand bunkers turned into Lava outcrops, the balls started flying in all directions, sometimes back onto the fairways, but more often, deeper into the impenetrable lava!
It was great to be based on board the ship and return each evening to dinner and entertainment after prize giving at the bar, often as we set sail again for the next island. One highlight for us was seeing molten lava spewing into the sea at the bottom of Big Island late one night as we sailed past. All to soon our time on the ship was over and we found ourselves back in Honolulu. Our last couple of days gave us time to visit Pearl Harbour and plenty of time to shop (except those who slipped away for another round of golf) before flying home.
